American Hickory (Carya Ovata)



Status: Secure and available.

Other Common Names: Shagbark Hickory

Found in Eastern United States, these members of the Juglandaceae family (Carya) can grow to 60-100 feet in height and 1-2 feet in diameter. .

Light to Medium brown heartwod and pale yellow colored sapwood. 

Medium texture, can be difficult to machine and turn. Tearout is common.  Specific Gravity: .64-.80. Avg. Dry Weight:  50 pounds per cubic foot.

Used to make: Flooring, Tool Handles.
